Introduction to TOPIK

How to Grade Graded within the Test Applied

Type of Questions :
- Multiple Choice: Choosing the best answer out of four possible answers

- Statement Question:

· Completing a sentence/a paragraph, Stating a sentence/a paragraph (4 thru 6 questions)
· Writing Question (150 to 300 Words for Beginner, 400 to 600 Words for Intermediate,
  800 to 900 Words for Advanced)

Content and Task Proficiency Evaluate whether the test-taker states appropriate content chronologically required and performs task properly
Coherence in Structure Evaluate whether the test-taker uses between paragraphs by using proper linking conjunctions and structures paragraphs cohesively
Language Use Vocabulary Evaluate properness, accuracy, and fluency of word use
Grammar Evaluate proper use of grammar and its accuracy and fluency
Orthography Evaluate orthography
Sociolinguistic Style Evaluate whether the test-taker uses appropriate writing genre and? register

Classification of a Successful Candidate

- Criterion for a Successful Candidate
· For those who earn more than successful test score in every respective section.
 
Example
What grade will a beginner level test-taker be, who earned 82 points in the vocabulary & grammar section, 48 points in the writing section, 76 scores in the listening section, and 80 points in the reading section?

- Average points of Overall Section: 71.5 points (Total 286 points/4 Sections)
- Failing Points (1st Grade: Less than 40 points, 2nd Grade: Less than 50 points): Writing Section (48 points)
- Successful Grade: 1st Grade

Answer: The test-taker earned 71.5 points over the successful second grade scores from overall sections except for the writing section (acquired 48 points less than 50 points requiredfor second grade, but higher than failing points of the first grade) Therefore, the test-taker becomes a first grader at the Beginner level.
 
Test Reporting and Issuance
- Issuance & Distribution of「Certificate of Korean Language Proficiency」
· Recipient: Those who gained over the points required from every section
· Domestic: By mail
· Overseas: By mail (By Overseas Registration & Testing Centers)

- Issuance and Distribution of「Test Score Report」

· Recipient: All test-takers
· Domestic: Test Score Inquiry & Printing of Test Score Report Only by On-line
(No Individual Reporting Available)
· Overseas: All Test Score Reports will be sent to respective Overseas Registration &
Testing Center
※ It is available for overseas test-takers to view and print off his/her Test Score Report
 
Content of Evaluation Range

Beginner 1st
Grade
- Perform fundamental language functions necessary for survival, such as
  Self-introduction, Purchasing goods, and Ordering food
- Understand and produce individual and everyday topics related to Self-
  story, Family, Hobby, and Weather
- Produce simple sentences through basic 800 words and sentence
  patterns - Understand and express simple daily conversation and useful
  expressions
2nd
Grade
- Perform necessary daily functions, such as Telephoning, Asking a Favor,
  Postal Work, and Banking
- Perform personal and intimate topics within 1,500 thru 2,000 words and
  understand them by paragraph units.
- Perform formal and informal language use in a certain situation
Intermediate 3rd
Grade
- Perform fundamental language functions necessary for daily life, visiting
  public facilities, and keeping social relationships
- Understand and express by paragraph units regarding intimate social
  topics as well as intimate and specific topics
- Understand and use of written and spoken language by distinguishing
  fundamental characteristics between the two language uses
4th
Grade
- Perform fundamental language functions necessary for daily life,
  visiting public facilities, keeping social relationships, and general affairs.
- Understand parts of news and articles - Understanding and use of
  general social and abstract topics with relative accuracy and fluency
- Understanding and use of Korean social and cultural contents on the
  basis of useful idiomatic expressions and representative Korean culture
Advanced 5th
Grade
- Perform language functions necessary for professional research fields
  or affairs
- ‘ Perform overall range of unfamiliar topics such as politics, economics,
  society, and culture
- Use of appropriate language by distinguishing formal, informal,
  spoken and written context
6th
Grade
- Perform language functions necessary for professional research fields
  or affairs with relative accuracy and fluency
- Perform overall range of even unfamiliar topics such as politics,
  economics, society, and culture
- Perform native-like level of functional performance in conveying
  message
